The Sound Of Poetry

Poetry can affect us, even when we do not understand its logic. The meaning might lie in its expression of a feeling, as conveyed through sound and rhythm.

Music has no specific meaning -- yet from it, we gain an experience. Music can elate, or soothe, or impart any of the unlimited responses, and so can poetry -- in an experience that has nothing to do with the mentally perceived words.

When song lyrics are in a foreign language, we can enjoy them, although the words are not understood. It is the texture of the word-sounds that grants the experience of beauty; and it is this beauty, and not a logically constructed poem, that we hear.
