The Distant Mountain

In the sky beyond Hansa shone the star, like a blue bulls-eye on the field of an unmarked target. And on the sea beyond Hansa flowed the waves, straight away from the boat, as though they were quiet signals sent ahead to the destination, to rise upon the shaped sands of that shore.

And there was the shore. Far away, below the low white clouds, the island lay. It looked gray, as if it were a shadow from some invisible thing in the sky beneath the blue star.

The wind blew stronger now, rising out of some unseen sky behind them, just as the land had arisen from the unseen sea ahead.

There was a mountain there, deep green with the forest that covered the slope, descending into deeper shades of green, down to the sea.
