Aspir looked at them, happy to see his friend and another. He asked, "Are you from the light world?"

Hugh said, "The outside world? Yes. How long ago did you leave there, to live in this cavern?"

"For all I know," said Aspir, "I have always lived here. All I know is the echo of 'Huuuu' in the cave, and the reflection of blue light from the walls."

Hugh said. "Where I live, outside, the 'Huuuuu' sings clearly through the sky. And blue light shines straight down to me. Blues and 'Huuuu's' are everywhere, if you look for them. But they are more lovely in the daylight."

Then the old man said to Hugh, "Aspir doesn't know what daylight is." He pointed at the cavern around them. "This is the only world that Aspir remembers. We were all like this."

Hugh said, "I wasn't born in a cave." He walked toward the boy, and his shadow made the blue stone turn gray.

"Some caves," said Tuza, "aren't made of stone. They are made by the dreams that we dream when we forget who we really are. That is why we sing the song of the earth to one other, the song 'Huuuuu.' And as you know, 'Huuuuu' is also the song of the sky, where it is heard more clearly and beautifully. It is the song that we share as one."

"Hugh is my name," said the boy. His blue eyes sparkled.

Yes, Hugh," said Tuza. "You have the most splendid name. Deep inside, we are all secretly singing the name of the cave and the sky -- 'Huuuuu' -- with every breath. But with you, it is said clearly, as though you are a word of its song. And its light is clear in the color of your eyes, as though you are a part of its daylight."

Hugh turned to young Aspir, and said, "Would you like to go with us to the daylight?"

"Yes," said Aspir.
