Corot, Jean-Baptiste Camille

Peasants Under the Trees at Dawn, Morvan

c. 1840-45

Oil on canvas

10 3/4 x 15 3/4 in.

Man is an integral part of nature. In this painting the colors, the detail and the accent of the human figures is alike that of houses, trees and rocks. The feeling of spring is suggested by the low and clear light in the sky that gives everything a fresh almost frosted look. In the beginning at dawn there is this unity of natural time, man and the culture. We should remember this the painting tells us.
